Diaphragm Health

A "stuck" diaphragm is more than a breathing problem; it's a muscular and neurological dysfunction that creates a chain reaction of compensations throughout the body.

Some resulting patterns of musculoskeletal compensation may appear as:

  • Upper body strain: With the diaphragm unable to perform its function, the body recruits accessory breathing muscles in the neck, shoulders, and chest to compensate. This leads to overuse, tension, and the development of trigger points in muscles such as the sternocleidomastoid, scalenes, and pectorals, contributing to neck, shoulder, and upper back pain.

  • Postural distortion: Chronic use of accessory breathing muscles creates a shallow, thoracic breathing pattern rather than the deeper diaphragmatic breathing. This can pull the shoulders forward, cause the head to protrude, and affect overall posture.

  • Core instability: The diaphragm is a key component of the deep core stabilization system, along with the transverse abdominis, pelvic floor, and multifidi. When the diaphragm is stuck, this entire system can become dysfunctional, potentially leading to low back pain and pelvic issues.

  • Altered intra-abdominal pressure: The diaphragm's normal pumping action affects pressure within the chest and abdominal cavities. A stuck diaphragm can alter this pressure, potentially contributing to issues like indigestion and heartburn.
